Fact of the Day More Information The Egyptians are said to be the ones who set the trend of good hygiene. Mouthwash to the ancient Egyptians consisted of honey-water mixed with different spices.
The Greeks are the most well known popularizers of urine mouthwash. Dioscorides published a medical book back around 70AD claiming urine to work well for this purpose.
The Romans, who were notoriously fad-crazy took this mouthwash idea and ran with it. Of course, the urine of other Romans was no where near exotic enough for the aristocracy's teeth. For this reason they set their sites on far-off peoples. Portuguese urine was actually imported into Rome in large quantities and turned a humongous profit. The wealthy shelled out absurd amounts of money on what they claimed was the ultimate teeth whitener. Oddly enough, they also saw it as a godsend for its qualities as a mouthwash. Just imagine how bad their breath must have been that the smell of urine was a giant step up.
