Fact of the Day More Information Silkworms were found in the wild about 4500 years ago in China. Domestication has turned the silkworm into the likes of a fat, spoiled dog. Food now has to be put within inches of the worms because any further is too far; let alone, predators and other dangers of the wild. Humans are now the only thing keeping silkworms on the planet, thanks to our 4500 year old past malfeasance towards mother nature in the first place.
Ironically, after all of the advancements in technology and over 4000 years humanity still demands pure silkworm silk most of all. This demand is keeping the species alive. Yet, to get the silk the animal has to be killed kind of gruesomely. A silk cocoon houses the worm waiting to become a moth. The silk is only good when first spun around the worm so the worm and all is directly thrown into a vat of boiling water, killed, and extracted. View All Facts View Images View Maps Blog
