Fact of the Day More Information In practicing experiments dealing with the separation of light into the rainbow spectrum of visible wavelengths, Newton used his dark almost windowless attic. Periodically, Newton's cat Spithead would creep into the room opening the door ajar and fowling the experiment with the daylight. Newton became very aggravated but still had a sweet spot for his kitty and without letting the cat know he was upset, he fixed the problem. He cut the first cat flap (otherwise known as the doggie-door): a base weighted felt draping covering a hole cut into the bottom of the door.
It is also said that he cut a series of small holes along the bottom of the door when the cat had kittens.
One must remain skeptical of the fact that someone may have created the doggie-door earlier in time and thought nothing of it or that it was simply lost to history.
