Fact of the Day More Information Due to inhabitants like the English East India Company and similar Dutch and Portuguese institutions, the land and ecosystem as a whole has been spun 180 degrees. Staples such as he & she cabbage, the small bird sized flamingo legged wirebird, and some of the world's largest earwigs are natural to St. Helena. Out of the three, the wirebird is the only thing that truly survives on the island. Human inhabitants are now 50% African, 25% White, and 25% Chinese. The original settlers had slaves and crew from places like Madagascar (African Island) and Goa (India). [source]
