Fact of the Day More Information Dostoevsky mentions in his snippet on "The Grand Inquisitor" how the Catholic Church has used the tactics of the devil mentioned in the temptations of Christ. Specifically, Christ's refusal to make the stones of the wilderness into bread shows where the church accepted the temptation of the devil. The clergy became lords and since Dostoevsky also mentions that man cannot not have both freedom and bread at the same time, man has become slave to the church.
