Fact of the Day More Information The palm civet cat eats the coffee beans when they are most ripe for it's own purposes. After being digested they are just left for the taking (as disgusting as that may sound; let alone the fact that they are going to be used in a drink). The brew is said to have a unique flavor (to be expected) and natural sweeteners. As the Guinness World Record states, Kopi Luwak sells for about $300 (USD) per pound.
The name Kopi Luwak literally means civet coffee. When the animal eats the coffee beans they are young, red and referred to as cherries. The juices of the civet's digestive tract are the supposed origin of the exquisite flavoring. Only 500 pounds of Kopi Luwak are available in the market each year.
