Fact of the Day More Information St. Elmo's Fire or ball lightning is an illuminated ball of electrical discharge. Humans have historically seen this natural phenomenon as a sign from something supernatural; hence the name St. Elmo's Fire. St. Elmo originally comes from St. Erasmus and was associated with sea faring sailors. This is because ball lightning is often seen on sea vessels and airplanes.
Florescent lightning and neon signage use this technology. When a gas is exposed to electric current it ignites and glows. This happens in storms when pockets of gas become isolated and are then struck by lightning.
St. Elmo's Fire means there is a violent storm apparent or acomming, not a divine sign. [source] View All Facts View Images View Maps Blog
