Fact of the Day More Information The only places one can find the rafflesia are the jungles of Southeast Asia. This is probably a good thing because, as mentioned, it has the stench of rotting flesh. The reason for this odd feature lies in the problems the species has with pollination. These plants usually grow solo making it very difficult to come in contact with another's pollen. Flies are attracted to the flower's rancid smell and they are mainly what makes reproduction possible. [source]
Scientists are still pondering exactly where this flower fits into evolution; especially because it has no discernible roots or leaves. Besides the scent, the rafflesia plant also produces and radiates heat.
