Fact of the Day More Information Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães) [1480-1521] is said to have been killed by king Lapu Lapu of Mactan Island. Filipino legend glorifies Lapu Lapu as the sole killer of Magellan, mano y mano. Controversy arises when you bring up Pigafetta. Pigafetta was Magellan's official diary entry writer. He left us detailed accounts of the events in the Phillipines as well as an account of Magellan's death. Due to the fact that Magellan's position toward exploration became more of a missionary position when he reached these islands, no one knows if any historical documents were fudged to put the Spanish in a better suiting light.
History for the most part accepts that it was not Lapu Lapu himself who killed Magellan, but rater one of his men; because of Pigafetta.
