There is debate on how to measure the height of mountains with their bases lying at different altitudes. Mauna Kea is only about 14,000 feet from sea level. In the same respect, Mt. Chimborazo in the Andes has the peak farthest away from the center of the earth but is about 20,000 feet tall.
