Fact of the Day More Information Officially referred to as Rayleigh scattering, it was named after the englishman who studied the phenomenon (1870s). The first person to realize this was the reason was John Tyndall (1850s-60s).
The reason that blue is absorbed and not some other color like red is because the frequency of the color blue has a small wavelength. After understanding this people were still skeptical to the fact that the sky is not violet (the shortest wavelength visible to the human eye). We now know that violet is absorbed early on in the voyage of the sun's light through earth's atmosphere.
