Fact of the Day More Information Sometimes confused with the hydrofoil (that which lifts a boat out of the water for speed), the ground effect is a concept of physics. Flying close to the ground or water increases the pressure under the wings. This creates more lift than planes flown high in the air.
The largest of these Ground Effect Vehicles (or WIG Effect) was the Caspian Sea Monster built by the Soviet Union in the 60s. The vessel was about 60 feet long and its top speed was about 250 mph. 150 people could fit in the ship at one time.
