Fact of the Day More Information In medieval Europe the churches were the towns' tallest buildings. Due to this, people measured height by the structures. As you may have figured out, the churches of the Middle Ages are known for their extravagant stained glass window panes. These windows tell stories and are sometimes situated in rows up and down the walls. Otherwise the position of the stained glass itself creates the measure. This is possible because town/villiage life was very local. The "story" measurement would most likely differ from town to town, church to church.
There are also rumors of a Swiss style house that had actual stories written along the sides of each floor. This was probably created later as a play on the word story, as opposed to it being the origin.
