Fact of the Day More Information In the 80s, when portable music began, there were those urging users to be careful. With the modern adaptation of headphones into earbuds, something placed inside the ear, the decibel levels have increased uncomfortably. With the convenience of iPods and other portable players consumers are also listening for longer periods of time. New sound technology allows us to bump up the volume and not lose nearly as much quality as in the past. These volume levels will damage your ears and only lead you to needing it louder and so on and so forth. Interestingly enough, volume seems to have become a status symbol for some. Remember, the louder that people have their music blasting outside of their headphones, the cooler they think they are. The expression, "an ear for music" may become more literal in years to come.
