Fact of the Day More Information Galaxies are alive with activity. At the center of each is a black hole which holds the entire entity together. The pull of the black hole (gravity) holds everything in some sort of an orbit. As the black hole eats matter that spirals in as does water down a drain, it also misses some and therefore spinning them further onto new outer orbits. Like the patterns we are used to, larger galaxies eat smaller galaxies by absorbing them. This galaxy merging may some day be a threat to our very precious Milky Way. So far, black hole feeding is rare but does occur in our galaxy. Luckily our solar system is located 2/3 of the way outward from the black hole center in a mass of stars and matter.
