Fact of the Day More Information At 10 feet tall, this is the largest bird known to man. These birds roamed the earth some 15,000,000 years ago. The hodgepodge of similar species is nicknamed terror birds. Archeologists assume that after the dinosaurs became extinct, the next to gain power over the region were these massive birds. Although unable to fly, they were quite quick. On top of their speed, an 18 inch hooked beak could take down a pony in one shot. After a 10,000,000 year run at life, the extinction of the species came right after the North and South American continents joined. Due to this fact, some believe that beasts from the north dominated the area.
