Fact of the Day More Information Pure carbon is heated and compressed over time in order to create a diamond. Man has now harnessed this power of nature and has quickened it significantly. With man in control, diamonds can pave the way for Dr. Evil style technology, like immensely powerful and potentially destructive lasers. Or in the name of nonproliferation, diamonds can further revolutionize the transfer of information. Even if it doesn't seem possible, diamond can make tech devices over hundreds of times smaller and information could travel at the speed of light. Also, a screen could be made that would never scratch; unless, of course, if everything else is made of diamond by that time.
Growing diamonds is called chemical vapor deposition or CVD. With necessary pressure and temperature, carbon vapor lands on a miniscule diamond fragment, learns its form, and grows more of it. The result: a diamond identical to those found within the earth.
