Fact of the Day More Information Song and dance performances have been important in Japan hundreds of years; even the Samurai were expected to have a signature song and dance. Karaoke/???? itself began when recording artist Inoue Daisuke was pressured to provide recordings in order to have others sing along on their own accord. Unfortunately for neighbors, many houses were made of wood and paper letting the sound travel far and wide. With this obstacle in mind, karaoke boxes (sound proofed rooms) were set up around town. During the Japanese occupation of Korea karaoke boxes played an important part in social life as one of the few places where men and women could revel together.
Inoue Daisuke won the Ig® Nobel Prize for karaoke.
