Fact of the Day More Information Besides the ever popular West Nile Virus (inflammation of the brain), malaria (severe remittent fever), elephantiasis (grossly enlarged body parts), and yellow fever can also be spread by mosquitoes. Female mosquitoes live for about a month, while the males live for only a week. They can smell humans and other targets by the carbon dioxide exhaled and the perspiration expelled. Once they land they use their long tubed noses to find blood vessels beneath the skin. To help extract the blood, they release some saliva into the incision to constrict blood flow (anticoagulation). In turn, a disease would be transmitted from the saliva in to the human blood stream.
