Fact of the Day More Information The hurricane on August 23, 1893 came upon land at what is now John F. Kennedy Airport. The waters flooded downtown Manhattan Island up to Canal Street. Also, it is theorized that because the flooding occurred during low tide, the rest of Manhattan was saved from the disastrous waters (New York Magazine: Storm Tracker).
Hog Island itself was about a mile long of the coast of the Rockaways. Prior to its destruction, the island was an out of town refuge for some Manhattanites.
